The world of boxing was dealt another blow as former two-division champion Vernon Forrest was shot and killed in his hometown of Atlanta on Saturday night, according to police.
Forrest, 38, was shot “multiple times in the back” during what may have been a robbery, Atlanta police Sgt. Lisa Keys wrote in an email to the Associated Press.
An autopsy is scheduled for sometime today (Sunday).
Forrest (41-3, 29 KOs), in addition to beating Shane Mosley twice for the WBC welterweight title, also held the IBF weltwerweight title after scoring a unanimous decision win over Raul Frank.
Forrest’s latest conquest was a unanimous decision victory over Sergio Mora for the WBC super welterweight title last September.
